Thank you for coming back for one more visit this week- even though we aren't technically having THINK-ON-IT THURSDAY. Enjoy this super fun choice board for this week. If you like it, you can find more just like it from past weeks at http://www.stemcobb.com/k-2-blog
I HOPE YOU HAVE AN AMAZING SUMMER!

Hello young ones! I'm so glad you've come back and checked out the STEM website for another week of digital learning. Here is a great video and quick activity that we can do to help us review the ways that animals care for their babies! You can even make a bird call at the end with a simple piece of paper! Have fun!
Click on the picture below to see the video- the activity instructions are at the end! Welcome back, boys and girls! Thanks for checking the STEM website again - I hope you enjoy this week's activity!
We are still studying amazing plants. Did you know that trees can travel? Check out this amazing video and activity from Mystery Science. If you'd like to do the video, you can print the resources or just draw the pattern on your own paper at home. Have fun! I miss you! *This lesson is from http://www.stemcobb.com/k-2-blog This week we will encourage our young learners to explore the natural world by collecting, sorting and making observations about leaves. In the primary grades students are asked to construct an argument supported by evidence for how plants can be grouped according to their features, (SKL2). They are also asked to count the numbers of objects in each category and sort the categories by count, (MGSEK.MD.3). Materials you will need: paper, markers, crayons. As always, we'll start with a great book to read aloud with your child. Next let's play a sorting game with leaves online. Click on the picture to open the game! Now that we've explored counting and sorting leaves online, let's go outside and collect our own leaves. While outside, have your child use a digital device to take a photo of a couple of leaves they like. Let's try to find at least 10 different leaves to count and sort. Safety Note: Familiarize yourself with poison ivy prior to touching any leaves. Bring the leaves inside or on the porch. Encourage your child to sort the leaves into different groups by:
Make sure to count the number of leaves in each group. You can even record these data if you like. Finally, let's create some artwork using our favorite leaves. We're going to explore the best techniques to create leaf rubbings. Ask your child how we can capture the shape and design of a leaf on paper using markers and crayons? Allow them to brainstorm some ideas. Next use their ideas to create leaf prints. Evaluate: discuss what worked and what didn't work well. Watch the video below to see how this artist does leaf rubbings. Can you improve your leaf rubbings/drawings? Week of 4/20-4/24 This week, we are going to take a look at the traits or characteristics of different types of animals! Let's start with a great book. Check out this video all about animal groups and how we describe them.
Finally, let's wrap up the day with a great activity to encourage one specific type of animal to visit your house - a bird feeder! With your parents permission and help, try to make a simple bird feeder and then keep track of what kinds of birds visit your yard! Here are some of the birds that have visited Mrs. Harris's yard this week in Paulding County. If you want to easily identify birds at your house, try the Merlin Bird ID app for FREE! If you need some bird feeder ideas, check out some of these ideas from Happy Hooligans!
Week of April 13-17 Welcome back from Spring Break, my young friends! I hope you had a restful week off and that this week has been full of great learning opportunities! Today, we are going to focus on PLANTS! Let's start by checking out a great book about plants! I like this one called Plants Can't Sit Still. Now let's play a game! I like this one- click on the picture to go to the website. Parent Note: This website contains ads) Finally, let's finish out our study of plants with something that all good scientists like to do! With your parents help and permission, try and dissect a plant from your yard or somewhere near your house! I like flowers the best, but any small plant will do (EVEN WEEDS!). Bring your plant inside and see if you can identify it's roots, stem, leaves, and flower if it has them. Can you find any seeds? What's inside the flower part?
If you can, draw or take a picture of what you've done! I'd love to see it! And remember, all these activities are learning opportunities that are meant to bring joy to this time of stress. If anything about these activities is causing you stress, walk away from it and try again next week! Love to you all! ---Mrs. Harris and Mrs. Baker
Welcome back from Spring Break! This week we are going to focus on plants! Take a look at this video today- it shows a bean seed sprouting and growing over a few weeks. It is sped up to show you all this time in just a few minutes. Notice the roots, stem, and leaves growing. If you can, head outside and look for a growing plant near your home! It could be a bush or tree that's budding and producing new flowers or leaves, or maybe even a weed growing in your yard! Take a close look and see what you notice that you've never seen before! Come back tomorrow for another awesome plant activity! One of the things you can find in the day and night time sky are BIRDS! Check out this video to learn how to fold and origami bird today. Try it with different colored paper if you've got it! Give your bird and name and send Mrs. Harris a picture if you can! [email protected] |
